IgG food sensitivity tests: what the result measures—and what it does not
Food-specific IgG usually reflects immune exposure to foods and may be associated with tolerance; professional allergy organizations do not recommend IgG panels to diagnose food allergy, intolerance, or sensitivity. A long red list is not a validated elimination plan.
A food-specific IgG result does not diagnose food allergy, intolerance, or an undefined “sensitivity.” IgG commonly appears after exposure to a food; IgG4 can be associated with immune tolerance. AAAAI and other allergy organizations recommend against using IgG panels to decide which foods cause symptoms or should be eliminated.1
The test can generate a precise-looking list because laboratories can measure antibodies. The missing step is clinical validity: evidence that the measured value reliably identifies the condition and improves the decision being sold.
First identify the question the test claims to answer

Food allergy and food intolerance are not severity levels on one continuum. Allergy involves an immune response and can be dangerous; lactose intolerance, for example, reflects difficulty digesting a sugar. “Sensitivity” is used inconsistently and needs an operational definition before any test can be judged.
IgG and IgE are not positive and negative versions of one panel
IgE-mediated allergy evaluation starts with the clinical history: food, amount, timing, reproducibility, symptoms, cofactors, and treatment. Skin-prick or serum-specific IgE can show sensitization, but a positive result alone does not prove clinical allergy. NIAID guidance uses oral food challenge in selected, supervised circumstances when the diagnosis remains uncertain.3
Food-specific IgG generally reflects immune recognition after exposure. AAAAI notes that higher IgG4 may simply be associated with tolerance.1 Calling a higher value “inflammation” reverses the possible meaning without a validated bridge.
Analytical accuracy—measuring an antibody consistently—is not the same as clinical accuracy—identifying the cause of a symptom.
A direct-to-consumer label does not establish medical usefulness
FDA explains that direct-to-consumer tests vary: some are reviewed for specific intended uses, some are general-wellness products, and some may be offered without FDA review under the applicable framework.2 Ask for the exact test name, manufacturer, laboratory, authorization number if claimed, specimen type, and intended-use statement.
“CLIA-certified laboratory” describes laboratory quality requirements; it does not mean FDA approved the test or that the measured IgG diagnoses sensitivity. Likewise, a physician signature on an order does not validate the panel’s underlying claim.
Read the sample report before buying. Look for how foods are ranked, whether thresholds were validated, whether the report calls exposure a reaction, what disclaimers contradict the sales page, and whether the company sells the supplements or meal plan that the test recommends.
Broad elimination can create its own problems
A panel may flag foods eaten often, producing a long list that feels personalized. Removing many foods can increase cost, reduce nutritional variety, complicate social eating, and make it harder to identify the actual trigger. In children or people with limited intake, the stakes can be higher.
Elimination and reintroduction can be useful clinical tools when tied to a specific hypothesis and appropriate oversight. The key is that the plan—not the IgG color—defines the food, symptom, duration, measurement, nutrition replacement, reintroduction, and stopping rule.
If a person has had rapid hives, swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, repetitive vomiting, or another possible acute allergic reaction, a consumer sensitivity panel is the wrong routing tool. The evaluation needs an allergy-focused pathway rather than unsupervised re-exposure.
Build the symptom timeline before buying a panel
A nonspecific symptom can occur around many meals without being caused by every food in them. A structured timeline makes the question narrower before a laboratory result adds dozens of possible explanations. Record the food and approximate amount, preparation, time eaten, symptom, onset, duration, recurrence, and relevant context such as exercise, alcohol, medication, illness, sleep disruption, or several foods consumed together.
Then turn the timeline into one falsifiable question. “Dairy makes me feel bad” is broad; “this reproducible symptom begins within this interval after this amount of this product” is a pattern a clinician can evaluate against allergy, intolerance, gastrointestinal, medication, or other pathways. The timeline does not diagnose the cause. It reveals whether the test being sold is even designed to answer the observed question.
Compare the proposed panel with that record:
- Does it measure a biomarker tied to the suspected mechanism?
- Was its threshold validated against an accepted diagnosis rather than healthy exposure?
- Does a low result meaningfully rule anything out?
- Does a high result change a defined next step?
- Can the proposed elimination and reintroduction distinguish the suspect food from the rest of the meal?
Do not plan unsupervised re-exposure when the history suggests a potentially serious allergy. Professional food-allergy guidance centers the clinical history and uses validated sensitization testing and supervised challenge selectively; even a positive IgE test does not establish clinical allergy by itself.34 That makes a standalone IgG color score even less suitable as an emergency-risk screen.
The timeline also creates a baseline for downstream cost. If a test leads to supplements, specialty foods, repeat panels, or a restrictive plan, the original symptom frequency and severity should be measured the same way at a stated review date. Otherwise, normal fluctuation can be credited to a long elimination list without showing which decision helped.
Audit one wellness test in six steps
- Name the claimed condition. Replace sensitivity with allergy, intolerance, celiac disease, a named symptom pattern, or another defined question.
- Identify the measurand. Ask whether the panel measures IgG, IgG4, IgE, another biomarker, or several—and what each is claimed to mean.
- Check clinical validity. Request comparison with an accepted diagnostic reference, independent replication, and predictive performance in people like the intended user.
- Verify regulatory wording. Find the exact FDA status and intended use. Do not convert laboratory certification into test approval.
- Inspect the action plan. Ask what a high or low result changes, how symptoms are measured, how nutrition is protected, and how foods are reintroduced.
- Price downstream effects. Include repeat tests, supplements, specialized foods, clinical visits, and the cost of pursuing false leads.
The result in one accurate sentence
An IgG panel can report that antibodies to foods were measured in a sample. It cannot, on current professional guidance, convert those antibodies into a diagnosis of allergy, intolerance, or sensitivity. The most useful next question is not “Which red foods do I stop?” It is: what defined condition is being evaluated, what validated method diagnoses it, and how will a result change a safe, measurable plan?
